The Louisiana House of Representatives rejected House Bill 112, which would have expanded the state's schools anti-bullying law to ban bullying based on an explicit list of characteristics (race, gender, etc.). The most controversial items on the list were "gender identity" and "sexual orientation." Some activists believe opposition to this language led to the bill's defeat. Read more (includes video)...

Plastic Surgery: Antidote for Bullying?
2011-05-21 00:00:00
As a parent, you'd do anything to protect your children from the negative effects of bullying. But would you make your child undergo plastic surgery?
According to the CBS News report below, more and more parents are taking this option.
If your child has some physical attribute that sets them apart from others, the thinking goes, that attribute will make them a target for bullies. Have a doctor "fix" that attribute, and bullying won't be a problem.
Unfortunately, research shows bullies choose victims mostly due to perceived emotional weakness, with physical attributes being a secondary factor.
In other words, if your child has the emotional make-up of a victim, they'll still be a victim after the surgery. They'll just be a more attractive victim.
The notion that surgery is a fix for bullying not only shows appalling ignorance about bullying, but also demonstrates the shallow attitude that value lies in external appearance. It also exposes children to surgical risk for no compelling me

Recent Technical Issues Resolved
2011-05-14 10:28:00
On Thursday and Friday, there was some strange behavior at Child Safety Fredericksburg. Articles were appearing and disappearing, and changing order on the home page. Also, our RSS subscribers received multiple copies of some posts from earlier in the week.
These problems were caused by serious technical issues with our blogging platform, Blogger, for much of Thursday and Friday. Since Blogger is actually hosted and maintained by Google, the issues were beyond our control.
The issues should be resolved now.
I apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks to our regular readers for sticking with us during the outage.
Fox News Report on Bullying
2011-05-14 00:00:00
The attached video is an interesting take on the bullying epidemic.
According to the video, 13 percent of students in Minnesota public schools are bullied at least once per week. In actual numbers, that's around 100,000 children.
One expert interviewed in the video claimed to have read research that showed the best defense against bullying came when other kids stood up for the victim.
Please watch the attached video for further details.

URGENT: NC Abduction Suspects Still On the Loose
2011-05-13 16:09:00
Earlier this week, we reported on a man and a woman who are suspects in two attempted child abductions in Surry County NC.
As of today (5/13/2011), the suspects have yet to be caught. Surry County law enforcement is on alert, and thanks to news media reports and community activism there is a high level of public awareness.
Unfortunately, in situations like this the predator(s) will simply pack up and move to another area.
Since Surry County borders Virginia, there's a probability these people may head north into Virginia or south to Greensboro/Winston-Salem area to hide until the attention dies down.
To our friends in North Carolina or southern Virginia, please watch the attached video, and pass the word.
