No Food for Poor Rs.25,000 Crore USO fund to subsidize mobile telephone bills of Poor IndiansET reported that The Planning Commission has reportedly suggested that the amount of nearly Rs 25,000 crore lying in the Universal Service Obligation fund be utilized for subsidizing rural mobile telephone bills.The Planning Commission has proposed that the government, sent the proposal to the PMO to pay 20% of all mobile bills that are less than Rs 300 a month for customers in rural India by dipping into funds set aside for providing subsidized telephony.It has also suggested that all rural customers who take up a mobile connection be given a one-time subsidy of Rs 250 from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).Now Prime Minister's Office has ordered to telecome dept to study the proposal and telecoms department will submit its response by 17 January.Currently it is estimated that unutilized USOF fund is more than Rs.25,000 Crore and it is estimated that this will increase to Rs 36
