Immobile Dreams: How did the trailer come to be a symbol of failure?
2012-05-17 01:00:00
I found this on Oregon Humanities website. This wonderful article was written by Rebecca Hartman. It was originally published in their magazine Encore, Oregon Humanities magazine. It is a great read about the trailer trash stereotype and is extremely well written.  Immobile Dreams   How did the trailer come to be a symbol of failure?   by Rebecca Hartman Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, in the late 1960s, I was aware of two types of trailer parks—the ones along the northwestern lip of town that were often decorated with neat pathways of white stones and the ones farther out, at the margins of our community, that were clusters of tan and brown metal rectangles linked by dusty, unpaved roads. Snowbirds and retirees of modest means lived in the white stone trailer parks. The people who lived in the others were what my family and neighbors referred to as “trash.” They were not just poor; they were bad. Dangerous. Possibly criminals, though
Dreamy Double Wide - Molly's Interview
2012-05-13 00:37:00
Our newest  featured home  has definitely turned some heads! Friday's 'Dreamy Double Wide' post has shown us that with a little invention and hard work you can turn a double wide into a Southern farmhouse and be the envy of the neighborhood. Molly Howell and her late husband Chris made their double wide unique by adding features like a wrap around porch, a mud room, and a gorgeous guest house. They used antique tin for skirting and copper piping for racking.  With Molly's design and decorating talents and Chris's building talents, they made their house look as if it was built decades ago. Molly was gracious enough to answer a few questions for us. This is such a great interview because she is so honest and helpful. Her home is a wonderful example of the beauty that manufactured homes have when you give it a few touches of your own. Read on to get to know Molly a bit more and some of the secrets behind her gorgeous home:
Dreamy Double Wide
2012-05-11 12:48:00
Mobile Home Living's newest featured home is a newer double wide with beautiful and creative handiwork inside and out . It is owned by Molly and her late husband Christen (Chris) Howell.      Molly Howell is a 24 year veteran of the Air Force originally from Iowa and she loves architecture and design. Her home is a mix of eclectic decor with many historical touches all around. She is highly educated and her life has been filled with great adventure; living in other countries and even surviving a hijacking attempt! Her and Chris moved to his hometown in Florida and set up a beautiful homestead on the land he was raised on, complete with a gorgeous double wide. She lost her husband to cancer less than a year ago but her home is a beautiful reminder of him with all the ingenious uses of recycled materials and beautifully designed objects he created out of basic materials. Chris Howell was an adventurer and a man of many talents. A world traveler as well and a fo
Lovely Lake Side Park Model
2012-05-10 00:56:00
I found this beautifully updated 'Park Model' single wide on Houzz. It's a perfect lake home! I just had to share this gorgeous home with you, the remodel and decor is fresh and modern. The all white canvas has allowed the owners to use splashes of color in all the right places and can easily be changed when the mood strikes. The owner comments on Houze that this home is a mere 534 square foot. She also adds that it is in the Canadian Rockies on Shuswap Lake and is a 'Park Model' mobile home. The grey exterior color along with the light blue accent color is perfect for a lake home. Water colors are an obvious choice for a location so close to a lake! What a dream home and a perfect example of space and color usage for a smaller home. Note: I did try to get in contact with the owner so I could feature it properly but I received no reply to my message. Thanks so much for reading Mobile Home Living! EnergyStar Tax Savings for Mobile and Manufactured Homeowners
2012-02-07 01:18:00
You either look forward to tax time or you dread it.Since I have learned a bit about taxes while working for CPA firms, I have learned that a lot of people don't know about all the tax breaks available to them. Considering it is tax time and you have a little over 2 months to file (without an extension) you may want to read this and see if maybe you can save yourself some money. That's always worth a quick minute to look and see! Living in a mobile or manufactured home doesn't exclude you from tax credits that site built homes get. Many replacements and upgrades that you did to your home are eligible for tax rebates for the tax year ending 2011. Did you buy new doors, windows, heat/cooling equipment? Congratulations, you're eligible for a nice little break!   It’s been nearly seven years since the federal government first instituted the most recent series of energy tax credits to encourage consumers to install and use energy-efficient alternatives for home
5 Mobile Home Myths Busted
2012-02-06 01:58:00
The ignorance about mobile and manufactured housing is astounding. By ignorance, I simply mean there are many that are uneducated and misinformed about mobile and manufactured housing. Those people are usually the very ones who speak ill or spread untruths about mobile homes unknowingly. With proper education and knowledge I am certain we can change some minds and abolish a few myths. The fact that the journalist only report on the catastrophes in mobile homes doesn't help either. Have you ever seen an article about anything good happening to or in a mobile home? Me either! The only one's I ever see go like "7 Dead in Mobile Home Fire" or "3 Murdered in Mobile Home Park." I understand that bad news sells the papers but it is still a negative that we must overcome. Therefore, the following is my attempt to fix a few myths and falsities about out beloved homes, all of the information is copied from relevant sites and studies. Myth #1:  Mobile and manufactured homes
New TV Show "Downwardly Mobile" Airing On NBC
2012-02-03 11:57:00
There's a new mobile home show airing in the fall on NBC called Downwardly Mobile. NBC just ordered 8 episodes of the series that is set in a mobile home park starring none other than the queen of middle-class comedy herself, Rosanne Barr. Barr will be playing the “proprietor of a mobile home park and surrogate mother to all of the unique people who live there in a challenging economy.” At least that's how the producers and writer's are describing it. However, this is how Hollywood Reporter describes it: "Barr plays the operator of a mobile home park and surrogate mother to the  financially-strapped people who live there, according to the Hollywood Reporter.  Barr, 59, will also write and produce the multi-camera comedy." and this is how The Wrap describes it: "The multi-camera show will show Barr as the operator of a mobile-home park and  becomes a surrogate mother of sorts to her poverty-stricken tenants." Perez Hilton, the Hollywo
Beautiful Space Saving Bedroom Ideas
2012-02-02 01:25:00
Mobile homes, especially older single wides like mine, are tight on space. You have a choice of being a complete minimalist or having a very organized home in order to make you and your family most comfortable. Finding usable space for storage is often difficult so if you can make a piece of furniture double as a usable storage compartment you are winning the battle against the clutter. Bedrooms are very important in the space utilizing hunt. There's several things you can do to make extra space: add shelving, utilize normally neglected areas like under the bed or the closet floor, and buying a bed that has built in compartments. Following are some great beds that serve double duty to add space for organization. They are also gorgeous pieces of furniture.
