Can A Kid Be A Psychopath?
2012-05-15 01:10:00
The groundbreaking HBO documentary "Child of Rage" years ago showed how horrific abuse and neglect could leave a child unable to bond with other people, turning them into children "without conscience, who can hurt or even kill without remorse." In other words: the child becomes a psychopath. But what about the kids who aren't abused? What about the ones who, for no discernible reason, do horrible things to other people? "I've always said that Michael will grow up to be either a Nobel Prize winner or a serial killer," his mother, Anne, tells Jennifer Kahn in a recent shocking New York Times Magazine article. At age 9, her son has an extreme temper, lashing out violently and deliberately and showing no empathy or remorse. He's intelligent, cold, calculating, and explosive. "It takes a toll," she says, explaining her comment. "There's not a lot of joy and happiness in raising Michael." Experts are divided about whether it's right to label a child as a psychopath. On the one hand, their
Student With Flesh-Eating Disease Will Lose Fingers.
2012-05-13 22:22:00
Aimee Copeland, the Georgia student who contracted a rare flesh-eating disease after a zip line injury will lose her fingers. "Aimee will suffer the loss of her fingers, however physicians have hope of bringing life back to the palms of her hands, which could allow her the muscle control to use helpful prosthetics. They are awaiting a safe time before embarking on surgery for this," said a post on the University of West Georgia Psychology website. Copeland, a 24-year-old graduate student at the school, has already lost her left leg and may also lose her remaining foot, according to her family. Despite being hooked up to a ventilator and unable to speak, Copeland's family said she's showing signs of recovery. "Aimee appears to have normal brain function at this time, which is something I'm celebrating because within Aimee we have a very compassionate heart and an incredible mind of intellect," said Copeland's father, Andy Copeland. Aimee Copeland was riding a homemade zip line near
What If Our Hands Had 6 Fingers?
2012-05-12 01:54:00
As incredible as our hands are — capable of everything from threading needles to splitting wooden boards — there's no telling whether they are just right, or merely good enough. Evolutionary biologists don't quite know why humans, and the vast majority of four-limbed earthlings, have five digits per limb. Would life be much better or worse if our hands had evolved with six fingers instead? An extra digit next to our pinkies would make some tasks easier. We could strum more complex musical instruments, type faster and grip objects more firmly. "And a broader hand would make it easier to palm a basketball," said Cliff Tabin, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School who studies limb development in vertebrates. "But our fine motor manual dexterity is mostly thumb and index finger. An extra little finger more (or less) would not change much," Tabin told Life's Little Mysteries. By far the biggest impact would be on math — and a different number system could have surprisingly profound
Mother's Inspiring Video About Her Blind Baby Boy.
2012-05-10 00:30:00
People ask her why she didn't choose to abort her boy. They stare at both of them. They talk behind their back. But none of that matters because this mother knows that her boy is beautiful just the way he is.
How To Compliment Your Guy.
2012-05-07 00:52:00
Everyone loves a good compliment — even men. And the key to a good compliment is making it stick. With the help of two degreed relationship experts, we’ve come up with a solid list of do’s and don’ts to remember when sending some flattery a man’s way. Take heed, and you’ll surely earn brownie points — and you might even make him blush. 1. DON’T be impressed by his job, but DO notice how well he does it. While you might think drooling over his job title or salary is a great way to make a man feel worthwhile, expressing your interest in a guy’s career by saying, “Wow! That’s a lot of zeroes on your paycheck” is about as subtle as wearing a miner’s helmet and carrying a pickaxe. Frankly, it screams “gold-digger” to many of us. Instead, let him know that you’re a fan of how well he does at his chosen profession. “Guys want women to notice how successful they are, but not necessarily how much they earn,” says Scott Kudia, Ph.D., author of If This is Lov
Can Going Without Money Hurt The Economy? One Man's Quest To Be Penniless.
2012-05-04 23:37:00
Daniel Suelo is 51 years old and broke. Happily broke. Consciously, deliberately, blessedly broke. Not only does he not have debt, a mortgage or rent, he does not earn a salary. Nor does he buy food or clothes, or own any product with a lower case "i" before it. Home is a cave on public land outside Moab, Utah. He scavenges for food from the garbage or off the land (fried grasshoppers, anyone?). He has been known to carve up and boil fresh road kill. He bathes, without soap, in the creek. In the fall of 2000, Suelo (who changed his name from Shellabarger), decided to stop using money altogether. That meant no "conscious barter," food stamps or other government handouts. His mission was to "use only what is freely given or discarded and what is already present and already running," he wrote on his web site, Zero Currency. The question many people wonder: Is he insane, or a mooch, or simply dedicated to leading a simple, honest, dare we say, Christ-like existence? They're good questi
UFO Video Over South Korea: Fact Or Faked?
2012-04-30 00:56:00
An airplane passenger videoed a mysterious oval white object flying over Seoul, South Korea, April 7. The video has been lighting up the Internet since, and of course many people are offering extraterrestrial explanations. As is de rigueur these days, the UFO clip was uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed millions of times. Some comments say it's clearly an extraterrestrial spacecraft; others insist it's a fake. Still others say it's neither but instead is a real object — such as a plastic bag in the wind, a parachute seen from above, or a drop of water on the window — that simply looks strange from that angle. Aside from the anonymity of the cameraman, the video raises some red flags about its authenticity. For one thing, the video is not complete; it has been purposely edited to leave some information out. We know this because it begins in progress, with the UFO already well in frame, in the lower right-hand corner. The video camera didn't suddenly turn on to capture th
Men’s Insecurities About Their Looks And Rejection.
2012-04-29 01:21:00
We men don’t cop to it, but we worry about our appearance just as much as any woman thumbing through the latest fashion magazine. Just take a look at the masses of guys crowding the weight room down at the gym, those hair-restoration ads in the sports pages, and even the growing numbers of men getting cosmetic surgery. Yes, we care about how we look; very much, actually — but in a different way than women do. Let’s take a closer look: Insecurity #1: Hair loss Women have bad hair days. But men have bad hair lives, especially when balding becomes obvious. “It’s back there and it’s growing. I’m tempted to wear a fedora, like in Mad Men,” says Eric, a 48-year-old lawyer in Tallahassee, FL. “But that would probably just draw attention.” “I would take all the hair that grows out of my ears and my nose and put it back on my head,” says Max, a 28-year-old musician from Philadelphia, PA. “Hair loss is psychologically important for men,” says Stanley
How To Make Perfect McDonald’s-Style French Fries At Home.
2012-04-25 21:27:00
Even food snobs who shun McDonald's have to admit that they serve the mother of all French fries. Ray Kroc, one of the chain's founders wrote in his autobiography that the fry was "almost sacrosanct for me. Its preparation a ritual to be followed religiously." The end result is a crispy golden-brown baton showered with just the right amount of salt. The exterior's initial crunch yields to a tender and steaming white center. More, please? "They are consistent," says David Myers, chef/owner of Comme Ca in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. "I can't imagine how many millions of dollars in research and development they have spent in order to achieve a perfect fry around the world." Myers is no stranger to fried potatoes. His restaurants, which serve classic French brasserie fare, cook hundreds of orders of "pommes frites" (French-fried potatoes) a week. McDonald's French fries are shipped to outlets frozen. "We do all of ours fresh everyday," says Myers who uses the same recipe at his restaurant
