Starting School Right
2010-08-30 20:14:23
For many high school and college students, classes either started today, Monday the 29th, or they start soon. (Some unfortunate students started already, so be glad you had additional vacation). Everyone is nervous about their first few days and wants to make a great impression on the teachers and students that they haven't seen since the previous year. I mean really, who wants to start off on the wrong foot?
So how do you avoid starting school on the wrong foot? - Well there are a few ways to make your life easier the first week but in order for them to be successful, you need to put a lot of energy into them. I will start with seating because everyone needs a seat. Most teachers allow students to sit wherever they want on the first day of class in order to see who they like to talk with and be around. It is a test. Your first test of the school year. Where do you sit? The students who choose to sit in the front row are usually the smarter kids that the teacher does not need to worr

Do you want to know the Secrets to score well on the SAT or ACT?
There is no question that the SAT/ ACT is the most important test that a student will take during his or her career in high school. Both of these tests are important in college applications and decisions as they are both administered on a national basis. If you are deciding whether or not to use test prep, then make sure to read this article. Everyone knows the basics of each of these two tests and how they differ. For anyone who does not, the SAT tests how well a student can reason and take a test, while the ACT tests what a student learns in school. There are other secret SAT and ACT facts that are important to know.
SAT
The SAT now takes about 4 hours with a 5 minute break every hour or so. I am not going to lie, but it is pretty bad. It takes a lot of stamina in order to take this test and do well. It really does not help that the SAT starts at 8 in the morning, so students had better be fully awake at the start. So

Image via Wikipedia The essential things that all High School Students need to know before College.
There are plenty of things that high school students need to know, but I have compiled a list of a advice that is essential to all high school students to know before college. The sooner students read this list, the better.
1. Know the college rankings. Those can be found here on an old post along with some commentary on 2011 College Rankings. It is important to know the college rankings because it helps in student's applications and everything leading up to those decisions. Obviously, students who want to apply to the top 10 schools will need higher grades and test scores than if they want to apply to the bottom 50. Knowing where the college you want to go to ranks is very beneficial in the long run.
2. Consider your options for textbooks. While there will always be students who buy their books, a new and popular craze is renting college textbooks. The cost of renting textbooks

What is a good SAT score?
2010-08-23 17:48:20
Do you know what a good score is?
Everyone wants to know what a good SAT score is. Is 1800 good? is 1980 good? Is 2100 good? The answer is yes, each of these scores has the potential to be good. (Although, you can never go wrong with a 2100.) What people really want to know is how does their score stack up against the scores of other students who are applying to the same schools. An 1850 might be very good at one school but it will not help you get accepted into Harvard. Another thing to consider is that SAT scores are not everything. Although it is easy for colleges to compare
numbers, activities outside of school and grades are just
as, if not more important. All of these things are
important in admission, so a high GPA can compensate for slightly lower than average score. Do not lose hope just because your SAT scores are a little low, you never know who colleges will accept. You might have something extraordinary that all of the brainiacs with 2330's don't. There is a c
Making the Most of Activities Outside of School

What are the Best Extra Curricular Activities for College?
Well, it depends.
It is no question that extra curricular activities are essential for college admissions. As I briefly discussed in my previous article Activities Outside of School, extra curriculars put a human face on an application that is otherwise just numbers and letters. The way that a student chooses to spend his or her time leaves a very large impact on college recruiters and admissions officers. If you have ever been to a college night at high school, then you know that one of the first questions college representatives ask is "what do you like to do during your free time?" Colleges want the most interesting people (who are qualified) to make up their student body.
The first step in using extra curriculars for college applications is finding something that you like to do. Experiment! Students should join many different clubs and organizations early on just to get a little taste of everything that the school
Our Society of Grades
2010-08-22 22:40:02
What Have We Come To?
I absolutely hate to say it, but our society right now is focused on grades and grades alone. Grades on report cards, grades on essays, grades on attitude, grades on standardized tests, just grades. If something does not have a point value or grade assigned to it, then we do not care. Learning for the sake of learning does not matter if we do not have the grade to show for it. What caused this revelation on my part? I was sitting in religion class and my teacher told my half of the room to "grow a pair" because no one was saying anything. I contributed a few comments here and there, but only 2 people at the other end of the room really said anything the entire time. That was when I immediately thought to myself that unless there is a point value assigned to something, we (especially teens) just don't care. We were talking about the immigration bill in Arizona if anyone wants to know the specifics.

It is sad how true most of the observations are. It provides some great insight into the college system of America.
